Im in love with prophecies but not factions, i only play factions till the point where my character is lvl 20 and has the new armor, then factions is done for me.

Whats wrong with having stuff like fishing etc? I enjoy WoW as much as i enjoy prophecies (so dont tell me to find a new game :P), getting a few more items from the fishing is always good.

As for personal armor crafting, mining, tanning, etc. i dont like those much.

Anyways I like Factions cause it cuts out the bs unlike Prophecies. After running through the first campaign I found myself skipping alot just to get to the desert so i could become level 20 after beating the dopplegager. And Prophecies had loads of running around missions for what, 200 or 500 xp. Bleh, at least in Factions you can get 3 times that.

Factions eiliminates that and with all the easy quests, leveling up is done faster. Also I like the fact Factions has more and more mobs. After playing it for a month now, Prophecies is easy as hell.

I say if you own both you can;t go wrong. If you just got Factions, well Prophecies is a cake walk if you ever pick it up.

Also I like replayign old missions so I never really get bored. If it wasn;t for Keys I don;t think that would be the case, but yeah, I got a major key habit.

dunno know bout you, but high exp reward quests are a bad idea. If you gain exp like 10 times faster, then the game is indeed very rushed, and you'll be bored soon since lvling up is hardly part of factions.

Unbalanced bosses? I'd hardly call a glass cannon unbalanced, especially since they are bosses not just some unit in the field of battle waving a weapon. They are what they are, bosses and so they need to be atleast stronger than their counterparts.

Zones didn't force a locked gate system, excessive running in prophecies, and the countless "why running is good/bad" threads caused the gate system. Like it or not, its the ultimate solution to "big joo" thinking he is awesome killing people in starter arena with endgame armor.

Hmm, intersting thought. Maybe it'll end up being like Star Trek movies, where supposedly all the odd numbered ones suck. (I say supposedly in hopes of not offending those people who actually like any of them).

Man, I read every damn post on this thread (took like a half hour) and it was interesting. Here comes My Two Cents:

At the tail end of prophecies I was definetely ready for a new guild wars installment as I was very bored of the PvE elements (did eveything I wanted to do). So, when Factions news comes around, I read it in anticipation. Right away I saw some things that scared me (as it did most of the community), such as the possibility of Super-Powered Alliances, a faction that always wins, elite missions that can't get into, and very little "new" content.

So when I played Factions for the first week, I was already dissapointed and still am dissapointed. Why?

1) The game absolutley feels rushed. Maybe I'm the only one but isn't it nice to actually play as a lower level character for a little while? I mean, yes this is a skill driven game and all that, I get that, but at the same time its nice to take some time with your character and play through lower levels. In prophcies I used to get excited when I would get a new weapon for my lvl 13 ranger. In Factions, that never happens, since lvl 20 is 2 hours away....

2) The quests are horrendous. I'm just talking about the "unneccesary quests" here. Yes, I have laughed at some of the inside quests of the jokes, but that doesn't change the fact that none of them are fun to play. The rewards are always in the middle of damn nowhere and I have to take my crappy henchie group to get them. Yay.... The quests seem very generic, very Fed-Ex. I'm not saying Prohpcies didn't have it's share, but with those at least there wasn't so much backtracking and just...annoyance.

3) Just a little note about this, but the cutscenes in this game were the worst cutscenes I have ever seen. The voice acting was awful, just laughable (and I don't think that's what they were going for), and the camera is in very wierd positions in a few of them. Also, the story was predictable and quite generic.

4) You can try and tell me otherwise, but there is absouletley no way this game is a standalone game. It isn't. Yes, the number of "new" skills are the same (only for the new players to Guild Wars), yes the map size is very similar to prophicies, but it's just not as much.

The skills: As a player who unlocked all skills in prophecies, I did not need to cap any of the core skills from this game. So, all that was left were Faction only skills. For the core classes, the repetitive skills were annoying, as quite a few of these "Faction only skills" were repeats of prophecies skills. So what happens is there is actually a quite small amount of brand new skills in Factions.

The missions: Only 13 mission in Factions? Very lame. The timed system is lame. At least bonuses (the prophcies type) would have stretched this game out.

Backtracking: There are only four major "areas" here: the island, the city, the Jade forest, and the Jade Sea. The game seems to have so little length compared to Prophecies. Prophecies took up an expanse, while factions seems to try and fit everything in tiny areas. The length of exploring is shorter.

PvP: There is no way there is standalone PvP content in Factions. It's a joke. New guild halls? Yes, thats a nice thing, but it's not really new PvP content, just maps. Alliance battles are the only new form, but don't really matter. The lines on the map MEAN NOTHING. This was one of the biggest let-downs. OMG, I HAVE TO GO TO ANOTHER TOWN TO GO USE A MERCHANT!!??! I was really hoping they could have made this "war" feature feel like a war. In reality, it really has no consequence what so ever. It's ok to make things have serious repercusions, make the loser LOSE SOMETHING. At least that way we'll want to fight and we can feel like we are actually doing something useful. As for the rest of new pvp....wait there isn't anything else...

As outlined, you can see that there is not enough new content to be called a standalone game*. I put a * there because this pertains to people who owned and played Prophecies. Maybe this was a standalone game for people who didn't have prophcies, I don't know. But there is no way it was a standalone game for those who had Prophcies. I feel like I was taken and will seriously consider putting up $50 dollars ever again for a new chapter every 6 months (which is pretty ridiculous too).

Some good points:
1) The environments in Factions were very nice-looking. I like each one and I like the art style of the whole game, A+ here.
2) The ritualists actually don't suck as much as I thought they did initially, thats a pleasant surprise.

In conclusion, is factions a let down?
It most certainly is, but to be fair, I kinda had the feeling it was gonna be. The game didn't sound very interesting, and it wasn't. I basically bought it to get the new skills so I could stay competitive in PvP. And this turned out to be unneccesary as there are a good amount of repeat skills.

I loved the original Guild Wars so much, but Factions has left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I play Guild Wars now to just GvG with my guild, even though most of my characters haven't explored Factions. I just have no drive to go through the game. I feel very cheated for paying $50 for an expansion pack. Maybe the next chapter will be priced accordingly.

Well see in Prophecies if it was your first time through you had no business getting a run IMO. But by the second 3.... 4th....... 8th for those who have extra accounts... going through all the missions was just tough/boring work. We wanted certain builds to run in UW or FoW and so forth with our buds. Or we wanted that solo warrior for farming! Or in some peoples cases, they wanted that spiffy armor because they were to lame to take a real fight in the low level arenas... =/

I remember going to the ascalon arena in my ascalon armor and getting my butt handed to me by a warrior I couldn't touch, and yeah it was annoying but he was ONE in his team of newbs and he was more like their stance tank lol. We spent so much time trying to take him down that it was pointless. I think if you have been through the game once then all portals should be unlocked, but also thats just my opinion. *shrugs*

I am not sure what benefits I would gain or what I would lose by getting factions.

Also, as it is a stand alone game I assume that means that it would not overwrite/upate my current GW files like Trials of Obi-Wan did on SWG for example, but rather be a totally new game. That being the case can I play my current characters when I login to factions?

Sorry for all these nOOb questions, I just want to get all the info before I spend money on this.
You can play your current characters.

Can you imagine how hard that would be for new players? Nobody would be doing the lower missions, or quests. It would all come to a standstill, particularly around the jungle areas. This is the only way there's ever enough people. Things like this are done for a reason.

As for my opinion on factions, I agree whole-heartedly with above person's rather long post. The PvP content wasn't satisfactory, and they took away the only actual bits of the AB that was interesting to me. I haven't been able to go back into them because my guild isn't allied, but I ahve read about them and I just know it isn't fun. It might pick up soon hopefully.
The PvE content is alright, but I seriously "lol"'d at some of the cinematics. The voices just don't sound very good at all.
The quests are too tedious, going back and forwards, going through a tough zone and having to warp back to down, only to have to go back through that zone again.

The only good thing I can say is I like some of the new skills, and it gives a good variation of builds, and the new classes can be fun. The visuals are also rather spiffy. But other than that, it;s not fun, and too quick.
I don't like how prophecies is based on skill as it is, and Factions just made it worse. Everyone is level 20, and this makes it particularly hard on newer players. They're thrown straight into the full action at level 20, without knowing anything of their skills or how to link skills together.

Well I love factions, imo its better then prophecies

Factions is alot more dense...no silly running from place to place just to get to the new mission. I am sure that the ppl who don't like factions are the ones who have been playing prophecies for a pretty long time...

GuildWars won't change...they will add chapters with new things etc... but GuildWars will be GuildWars and it won't be a WoW2 (thank god for that) so ppl who want to have fishing, baking skills etc.. go play WoW.

atm there are ppl complaining that they can go both sides in the game (luxon and kurzick), man if you couldn't do this and you were bound to your alliance then you guys would complain that you get left out of certan aspects of the game (look at that 1 mission, the Deep).

On the other hand I can understand that some ppl don't like the alliance thing just because it isn't something they like, BUT Anet wanted to make GuildWars more Guild based (I love it). If you don't like these alliance missions maybe chapter 3 will be something for you.

I love factions, love alliance battles and alot more, but I don't like how this community is turning into a whine community.

-Kurzick guild hall
